My work on Nightshift continues, mostly at home in the evening (as seems appropriate given its name). As mentioned in my previous post, I’m barely deviating from the specified colors of Spincycle Yarns Dream State, aside from swapping out a maroonish-purple hue for an evergreen with lighter elements.

I had my doubts when I got to the deep green color (Cataclysm). It’s my sixth color in the lineup. The contrast between it and the Melancholia (deep blue) was very low. Then when I switched from the Melancholia as the background and the Cataclysm was paired with the Rusted Rainbow (brown multi-colored), I was not crazy about the matchup. The magical thing about the Dream State is that each skein has quite a bit of variation of hue and tone, so as I kept going I really started to love the way they were paired.

I think it’s actually my favorite section so far (shown above). I love how the deep green transitions to include some yellow and then transitions back to a deeper blue green. Watching the colors transition is definitely one of the best parts of working on this shawl.

The formula is pretty easy to get down. The pattern is written so that you can mix up the colors as you wish. However, I am using the specified yarn and the designer cautions the user to have an accurate gauge due to close margins on the yarn specifications. That gave me some hesitation about mixing things up. So far I’m loving all of the earthy tones and how they’re coming together.
