This is another pattern/project I’ve had around for awhile. I wrote this pattern last summer, but neglected taking a picture for a WHOLE YEAR. So, here is the Wasabi Cowl! This pattern is free and available on Ravelry for download. Find it here on Ravelry. Or directly download it. DOWNLOAD PATTERN HERE

This pattern is extremely simple and ridiculously quick to knit. It is knit on size 19 needles with super bulky Colinette Point 5. I think all in all, it took me less than an hour. I also wanted an excuse to use one of the fun and huge buttons we had at Hand Held.
This isn’t a project that really needs blocking, but I put in on my blocking board and lightly steamed it to get more accurate measurements.
Here is what it looks like on my blocking board:
That picture shows off the yarn overs more than you can see when the cowl is worn.

EDITED TO ADD: Hey guys, I’m disabling comments on this post. Please see the FAQs here before you email with a question and check out all the great projects on Ravelry to see how people are wearing them and what alternate yarns they have used. Thanks!
I think that is one of my favorite pieces of knitwear you’ve shown on this blog.
what a cute cowl!! And a great way to show off a big bold button.
simple et beau!
great!
This is fantastic! Can’t wait to make this for Christmas presents!
I LOVE this!
I love the color, it’s one of my favorites! I especially like the combination of the stitch pattern and yarn!
I like your work! do you deasign them? or have patterns already? what type of yarn do you use? I bought a lot of alpaca yarn and have stuff made from it (since i have no skills) just beautiful
I do some crochet… but have always found knitting more time consuming… but by the looks of it.. I think I should work wit super bulky/ bulky yarns for knitting and that should work totally fine !
Lovely cowl… been looking for one like this!
This is fantastic. I can’t confess to really being able to knit although with a help of a friend I recently knitted some booties for a colleague expecting a baby. I had a horrible teacher in primary school who told me I couldn’t knit and for many years I believed her. I’m very proud that at 45 I have banished that demon and I’m very proud of my booties!
You clearly have a talent and I look forward to seeing and reading more – off to find your subscribe button. Will also pass your blog onto a friend who, like you, is a creator of wonderful things.

Hi, the color is very nice, is very fashion, I liked…
You can find this design as well as my others on Ravelry. http://www.ravelry.com/designers/cassandra-dominick
I love this scarf I need to learn how to knit lol I crochet!!
This piece is so interesting and creative! I love it!
Love this and soooo want to try it. I am a bit of a novice, so I am wondering, why is there the SLM abbreviation but it is not used in the pattern? Do you have to move the marked (centre) stich on each “row 1”?
Thanks!!
it’s just so lovely 🙂
so lovely!! I like it.
Love the cowl-great easy, quick Xmas gift for my nieces!
I really love to make this….I’m a beginner knitter. So I think this would be perfect for me to do. So how do I get the pattern?
Hey there. Great pattern! Looking forward to trying it. I was wondering if you could suggest an alternate yarns to use that might be alittle cheaper ( might be making it for some co workers) Thanks
Heather
Many people seem to be having difficulty finding the pattern. In the first paragraph I link to the Ravelry page with the pattern. Thanks for the interest!
i love it! what a clever construction 🙂
I am new at knitting. What a wonderful easy pattern!!! Thank you for sharing!
My kind of project. Quick and different!!
WOW!!!!
Pattern is hard to find. click on find it here (first paragrah) then click on pdf download.
if your going to share a pattern you should give instructions on how to find it!
I’m sorry that was hard for you to find. I put the link in bold and made note of the location in an earlier comment. I thought that was sufficient, but I may have been assuming people would read the info about the pattern along with looking for the link.
I love this but have tried and tried and can’t seem to follow the instructions. Can you possibly list the no. of stitches as we go along. When I YO it adds stitches but it all looks very messed up. I must admit that i am finding it very hard to work with the huge needles and the wool recommended, but it must be ME!
Thank you.
Beverly
There should only be two additional stitches made on every other row. I’m sorry that I can’t put together a row by row guide right now. My school life is ramping up to the end of the semester. The pattern starts with 5 stitches and increases by two every other row. So you should always have an odd number and you are only increasing with YOs on *every other increase row *, meaning the other increase rows are done with M1 stitches. As long as you have your center stitch marked, you are making your YOs on each side of that stitch. You should mark the stitch itself, because placing the marker to one side of it will cause the marker to move as you make YOs. Cassy
from what corner to what corner do you fold it after the cowl is made? I”m a little confused
When I made the cowl I put my button on the purl side at the top left if you are looking at it. I just put it around my neck with the longest (bound off) side being the part that wraps around the neck, purl side out, and place the button through somewhere that looks good on that other top (near the bound off edge) corner. It looks slightly different every time for me. You can make it looser or tighter depending on where you put the button.

Hi
I am a new knitter, so I must have missed something. Where do you get the stitches for the M1R, though. Weren’t the YO stitches just purled in the second row? Help!! Thanks
Ah. I got it. Couldn’t figure out what ‘bar’ you were talking about at first. Thanks.
Our knitting ministry would like to make cowls to sell for the benefit of our local food pantry. May we have your permission to use this pattern?
Thanks.
Cyndy
I’m not a knitter, but this inspires me to pick up a couple of needles and give it a go. It’s just beautiful! Thank you so much.
I really love your pattern and the collinette 5 yarn. I want to make it for my daughter but am having trouble finding the yarn on-line. Can you help me?
Thank you i am going to try to do this……..will let u know……….Alicia
Aloha! I love this although the chance of wearing it in Hawai’i is limited unless you live in (for example) in Waimea/Kamuela on the Big Island…. Also, it -IMHO- should be called “honey mustard” since wasabi is GREEN. Anyway, it is beautiful.
You’re right! The color is more like honey mustard. I’m not totally sure where they got the name. There are some other examples of Wasabi dyelots that Colinette has done that are more green. They have some sock yarn that is much more green than this. Thanks for the compliment!
this looks so grand and yet is so simple!
Please see the FAQshere for more info. Cassy
It’s done and now it makes sense 🙂 I couldn’t find a 15mm set of needles so I used 12.5mm. I also used the larger amount of yarn & needed all of it. The button goes on tomorrow and I can’t wait to give it to my mom.
I finally started mine today!!! In a beautiful shade of rose pink… YAY!! I love your patterns and attitude 🙂
A M A Z I N G !!!…THANK YOU FOR SHARING IT WITH US.LOVE FROM GREECE.
I just started knitting a month ago. I love this cowl and plan to make it soon. Thanks for posting! Xmoves8 – You could only possible wear this on the big island up on Mauna Kea…lol! I can’t wear anything but lite cotton in Hawaii where I was born and raised. Here in CA, I can get my knit on and love it.
Bless you for showing the blocking diagram with measurements. I have been working on this in Malabrigo Rasta in Iris and it is amazing! It was turning into
a huge triangle, and I was not sure it was supposed to be one…so many thanks
for a great pattern, and the clarification!!!!
Me gusto la bufanda, cuando la haga veré si hay cosas sin entender, gracias Victoria
I have this in my WIP bag in Pink. I am afraid I messed it up being so new to following knitting patterns. I will be ripping and redoing asap as I love this piece, and have since I found it last year!!.
I don’t knit, never learned how, but this cute little number makes me want to. Gosh, this would be great in the winter to use in bed when I’m up reading and want my neck to stay warm. So cute!
Kim
What is the color # of the yarn used in the wasabi cowl?
The yarn color is Wasabi.
I wondered where the name of the cowl came from!
I made this scarf last year for my mom who loved it. Making it again for myself now. I’ve got a beautiful purple/blue/pink mixture I’m working iwht.
I love the Wasabi Cowl! I have knitted this for my neice and used a different yarn. It looks really cute and I will be knitting this pattern again! Thanks!
Thanks for sharing the pattern, and for your incredible patience in the FAQs.
Such a fun accessory that I made one even though I live in Tucson.
LOVE LOVE LOVE this! And thanks so much for the FAQ!!! Lastly, congrats on working on your PHD…go kick butt.
Absolutely love this pattern! Being a new knitter, I am not sure what the “bar” is is in the M1R and M1L and hope to figure it out as I progress. Thank you! as I have some totally crazy buttons to use!
What other yarn has others used?
It seem to get the specified yarn, I will have to order online.
I would love to be able to make a few for Christmas.

If you check out the Ravelry project page there is a “yarn ideas” tab so you can see what others have used. Here is the link: http://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/wasabi-cowl/yarns
