I’m still playing catch up with some projects that were presents that I haven’t blogged about. This is a pair of Hermione’s Everyday Socks in some Knit One Crochet Too Ty-Dy Socks in the color Painted Desert. These were a gift for my friend Karen in St. Louis, to fulfill a special request from her husband. I wanted to make sure they got to her by Christmas, so I did a pattern that could be completed without extensive concentration, making it a bit faster. I was able to crank these out in a little over a week to ship them off in plenty of time for Christmas.
Karen is a huge fan of Harry Potter. She and our roommate, Genny, got me to read the first book in college after I scoffed at them a bit for reading a kid’s book. Now I’m also a huge fan. I thought Karen would really appreciate a sock pattern named after Hermione. I think these socks put me so much in the mood that I had to re-watch all of the movies.
I love this yarn. I made these socks for Matt out of another colorway in the same yarn a few years ago and they still look great. I had this in my stash and as I was knitting it I fell in love with it all over again, so I immediately had to replace the yarn for my stash so I could make another pair for myself…
Hi Cassy. I have been working on my own pair of Hermione’s…very slowly. I have finished one sock, but not without some difficulty. I should say this is the 4th pair of sox I have made so I’m not an absolute beginner. After printing out the pattern I realized it was designed for use on 2 circs and I don’t know that method yet so I just used dpns. (I use a pattern called Classic Socks for the family or something by Melinda something.) Of course this was fine until I began decreasing for the toe and had quite a bit of trouble figuring out where I was in the 4 row stitch pattern. ugh. On first pass, I actually began to decrease too soon and then sock was then too short. I ripped back and knit the whole toe again and it’s better. But along the way, I panicked that I wouldn’t have enough yarn. I am using Paton’s Sox FX. I only have two skeins. I have never exceeded a skein for myself. I wear size 7 1/2 shoes but my feet are actually even shorter than that. Anyway, sock number 1 is done. I had about a yard of yarn left over (phew!) and am about so begin sock #2. Do you have any advice before I begin to make it easier this time? PS. Your socks came out beautifully.
I don’t have much advice because I knit mine toe up using magic loop. As for remembering what row you’re on…you could try a row counter. I didn’t use any part of the pattern aside from the stitch pattern itself, so I can’t really speak to pattern specifics. Good luck!
Love the colorway.
They look lovely in this ColorSync! Hermione’s Everyday Socks is such a great pattern, very rewarding!
*color* (aargh that automatic word fill in gets me everytime! 😉 )
I love the idea of Hermione knitting socks. I’m pretty sure she would be determined to do it the muggle way too!
So pretty – I love the pattern & the shades are fab too! Great gift to give somebody – a lucky recipient.
My boss gave me HP1 for Christmas. It’s a “pure fun book” she says and my son (10) could not agree more. Looks like reading it is a must – however, I am much more tempted to knit those socks! Beautiful pattern, lovely color!
Beautiful! I’m no friend of pink, but these look great! I still have to knit that pattern … But the day will come, there’s no way around them. 😉
Wow, so fun! I love this colorway!
The pattern is really nice too…
Love the colour!!
Izz
look amazingly wonderful!
I keep seeing this pattern around and I love it! I got some sock yarn recently so I think it’s about time I made my first pair 🙂
hi hi – i was hoping you might be able to help me? I am a very new beginner at knitting – as in i’ve only made some washcloths and a few hats on the knitting looms – but have been wanting to make some slipper socks for myself. i have a set of circular knitting needles but all i can really figure out is the casting on. the videos i’ve found online are all so different i have become overwhelmed! Can you steer me in a helpful direction?
I love all your projects by the way – i am just reading every post as I scroll down your main page!!!
Knittinghelp.com is a great resource, as well as Ravelry.com for finding patterns and reading what other knitters have said about them. A good knitting guide is Montse Stanley’s Knitter’s Handbook.
