If you’re into knitting and politics you’ve probably already heard of the Pussy Hat Project. This post is quite belated for the marches that happened all over the country and world at the end of January, but I finally finished one of these Pussy Hats for myself and thought I’d post about it.
This is a super simple knit, as you can see if you take a look at the pattern. I first made one in the round for my friend Canem. She was able to March in D.C. in January and about 72 hours before she was about to leave I remembered the Pussy Hat Project and decided to whip one up.
She told me the plane going to D.C. was full of women, most of them appearing as if they were heading to the march in D.C.
She said there were Pussy Hats everywhere. I’m so proud of her for being in that march with her family.
I made one as directed (flat, then seamed) for myself after the fact. For mine I used Manos del Uruguay Maxima in the color Prince (M2602). In the one I made for myself I used 157 yards of this singly ply worsted weight yarn, or approximately 72 grams if you want all of the details.
Aside from being cute while making a political statement, this hat is incredibly comfortable and doesn’t flatten hair. Zooey and Charlotte keep trying to steal this hat, so I might have to make them some mini versions of their own.
My sister went to a march near our home town, she also brought along a handmade pink hat to wear.
I made a matching one for my daughter (she’s 16 months) and I must say it’s the cutest freakin’ thing ever. Get tons of compliments on it.
Ooohhhhh. I should probably just do that too!
Rich color! A mini will be so cute!!!
Manos rocks. Fun color and great hat. I had knitted the Kit Kat hat a few years ago for a fellow school mum who was going to go through chemo; she told me recently she wore it to the SF Women’s March which I thought was cool.
Fantastic hat! I made one for Lila for hen we attended the women’s march in Toronto, but she refused to wear it- so I wore it instead and she wore her bunny hat. But she was clear, ‘bunnies still want equality!’ I’m not entirely sure she knew what it meant, but the pride nearly made my heart explode.
