Do you have a favorite recipe? It’s dependable, delicious, and you don’t mind making and consuming it over and over. That’s how I feel about stockinette socks. I’m just going to keep making them. Forever. I don’t get tired of the soothing rhythm of the knitting, and they comfort my feet during colder months in a way no commercial sock ever has.
Sometimes as a project they feel like an afterthought. I always have a pair of socks on the needles ready to sling in a bag to take to the pool, or the movie theater, or a drive. I appreciate the constant readiness of a sock project because I always know where I am in a sock pattern.
These socks are for Matt, made with ONline Supersocke 4-Ply City Colors in New York. The color shifts were subtle and hypnotic to see unfold. I have no doubt these socks will be durable. I made them two at a time, magic loop, from the toe-up and used all but a couple of yards of the yarn. If you hate yarn leftovers, I highly recommend knitting socks in that way.
I have so many more interesting knits happening to report. These humble socks were sitting on a desk for over a month, blocked but ends unwoven, totally unnecessary in the 90+ Fahrenheit degrees. I felt sorry for them and decided they should be finished and blogged.
So here they are. Another pair of socks.
I’m a relatively new sock knitter, but they are quickly becoming an obsession!
While I want to be one of those people that always has a pair of sock on the go, I’m not. Partly because I never know where I am with a sock. At the heel? How much longer am I supposed to increase? decrease? How do short rows work again?
I suspect practice would help. I prefer the plain vanilla sock, toe up, but haven’t tried two at a time/magic loop. Are there any books or tutorials you can recommend?
Great colour and your knit fabric looks so smooth – I love them.
My favorite is Vanilla Latte socks, but plain stockinette are a close second! These look so cozy!
Casey, can you recommend a good pattern to knit socks the way you knit these? For basic socks, they are EXACTLY what I would love. Having always knit socks toe-down I would love to try knitting two at a time, toe-up. Beautiful workmanship.
Socks are definitely an afterthought project for me, and I don’t mind thinking of them that way. I always have a pair in a bag in my purse. I always almost knit vanilla of some sort.
I’m currently working on a pair of Rose City Rollers, a pattern I’m knitting for the first time. I think they may be my favorite now 🙂
I love the Smooth Operator pattern by Susan B. Anderson. It’s definitely a vanilla sock and it is incredibly soothing to knit! Like you, I almost always have a sock on the needles ready to pull out.
LOVE those colors! Socks are my favorite project and I too always have a pair on the needles. My favorite pattern is still Hermoine’s Everyday Socks with Vanilla Latte a close second.
I still use the two-at-a-time magic loop pattern that we used when I took my first sock class from you at HandHeld. It’s the most clearly written heel flap pattern I’ve found. 🙂
Aw! That’s great!
