While I absolutely love this Tarmac tank, I’m not sure how I feel about the size of the armholes. While I was knitting this I knew they would be larger than ones I make on other garments, but it wasn’t until blocking that they really seemed to be so large.
The tank is really comfortable. I did add a couple of inches to the length, as I am not into a (what would be for me) super-cropped tank. I have no idea how many stitches I ended up with as I continued to increase in pattern, but I knit past the armholes for about 13″.
I think the length is perfect. I really don’t even mind the width of the armholes, but I’m going to have to step up my cute bra game. I was brainstorming with my friend Jenni last weekend and we came up with the idea of possibly knitting some lacy addition there. I would probably use the cream color and just pick up along the bottom edge and make some very simple lace short rows. Probably two inches would be perfect. I’m not sure I will do it, because I think it as is, as long as I have a suitable bra. The tank is breezy and super comfortable so far. I used the recommended yarn, YOTH Best Friend in mint and vanilla. The pattern was well written and a pleasure to knit, and the result is super light and airy tank.
Is it made to be worn over a tank top? I was thinking of knitting something like that up for my daughter in law but thought she’d hate having to wear a tank under it. Kind of defeats the purpose of a summer top.
I believe it’s meant to be a standalone garment. I would plan on shorter armholes and casting on fewer underarm sts and that would prob help tremendously if I were to do it again. I agree that a second tank totally defeats the purpose of a summer top! When you look at the pattern photos there is clearly an undergarment showing, but many on Ravelry have had more success with modesty.
It’s quite pretty and a great summer tank! I appreciate the pro-bra game comments 🙂 summer is tough on the undergarments!
I love the idea of knitting a lace piece in there! I have the big armhole problem with any dresses I buy from cheap lace,s like Joe Fresh. I usually turn them inside out and then sew them up, creating a new side seam… if you have the extra fabric and felt like doing that, you could! Or get one of those pretty lace bralettes… I thought bralettes were a dumb idea until I got a couple from Aerie/American Eagle…. now I have loads of them because they are So. Comfortable. Excellent coverage and super cute.
I think wearing a top under the top would defeat the object of having a summer tank too – I would go for the glamourous bra option!
