It seemed time to cast on a kid sweater. The weather here is still sweltering, but I know cooler temps are just around the corner. Zooey was a big fan of Bitty Breezy the first time I made it for her, until she decided the yarn was too itchy… She requested a cardigan of some kind for her next sweater, and I have about 600 yards of this Colinette Jitterbug hanging out in my stash just waiting to be something fun. This seemed like the perfect project.
The yarn is Colinette Jitterbug and the color is Paint Box. I previously held this yarn with other colors to make a bomb ass hoodie for Zooey (that has also been rejected for being too itchy). Jitterbug is pretty soft. It’s not buttery soft like Malabrigo sock or Manos del Uruguay sock, but I don’t anticipate that she will reject it. I previously held it with some Regia sock yarn, which is not merino and can come off as kind of itchy. That’s the same type of yarn I used for her last Bitty Breezy, so I guess Regia is out for garments for her.
But really, a white sweater for a kid that plays hard is probably a big mistake. I cast on knowing this fully. We’ve already talked about overdyeing with some koolaid and I think that would be a good solution. I’m a little hesitant because I worry some of these fun speckles could end up looking brown. I’m not an experienced dyer by any means. I’ve dabbled with koolaid only a few times, and mostly have really liked it. Zooey, of course, was immediately drawn to pinks, so we might try a pink lemonade. A yellow might work well too for avoiding brown speckles. I’m sure many of you out there are more experienced, so if you have any overdyeing tips please feel free to share them!
That is going to be super cute
Do you have enough yarn to try overdying a bit of it before you dip the sweater? It should give you an idea if you will get too much brown for your taste.
That’s a fantastic idea! It didn’t even occur to me… 🙂 I will probably have enough at the end to make some small swatches and test it out. Thanks!
