I crushed on this Eventide pattern since I got the Autumn Pompom Quartely that included this in 2019. I had some leftover Miss Babs Keira in several colors and this seemed like a great project for the amounts I had left. The grey is Quicksilver, the orange is French Marigold, and the navy is McHale’s. This yarn is a little heavier than the recommended yarn, so I made a gauge swatch and decided to go down a size to get what the amount of ease I wanted.
This pattern is beautiful, but I was definitely nervous about the number of ends to weave in that would be an inevitable part of this type of pattern. I’ve handled those by weaving in the ends as I go as shown on this Stephen West Instagram post. For some of the ends where that didn’t seem possible, like working the WS of the garment, I knit the strand doubled to work the end into the garment. This only occurred with the grey color. To me it does not seem noticeable enough from the right side of the garment. There are a few rows that look a little thicker where the motifs are joined, but I’m sure I’ll be the only one that notices and I did not want to end up weaving in over 480 ends. Yes, you read that correctly. I highly advise working them in as you go.
The motifs are simple to execute and after the first few I no longer needed to look at the pattern. These motifs are pretty addictive, but I was a little overwhelmed at the thought of making eighty of them. Now that I’ve memorized the motif pattern I can do this easily while at work or watching TV, so the figure is a little less daunting. Though I did wash my gauge swatch, for some reason I’m still paranoid about this ending up too large, but now that I’m this far in, I’m just going to keep going. A little too large is better than too small.
I cannot wait to wear this. It’s insanely hot and humid here, but I foresee wearing this in the fall over dresses, with pants, and layered over jumpsuits. I know this is a garment I will want to keep and wear for years to come–as long as it doesn’t end up the size of a parachute….
Obsessed with the colors and pattern, but yeah, that unknown size when done and number of ends dilemma are nothing to sneeze at! Can’t wait to see how it knits up.
Ohh this is so nice! I have this issue of PomPom so I’ll have to give it a look.
That’s ambitious and beautiful.
Thanks so much! It’s engaging.
I can’t wait to see the finished project. The pattern is so interesting.
I like Stephen’s tip… thanks for sharing it! Never saw it before and really want to try it!
You are welcome! I’m so glad he shared it on Instagram in the first place! It’s been a real sanity saver for this project.
Such a pretty pattern. Looking forward to seeing your finished result.
