As soon as the weather starts to get chilly outside a little alarm goes off in my head and it suddenly seems imminent that I must knit all of the warm things for the small people. I cannot explain why this does not occur to me in the summertime, with plenty of time to spare. That’s just how things work for me.

Last week I decided the girls needed some new socks. The purple and navy pair are made with Cedar House Yarns Sapling sock in Lilac and Midnight on the Mountain. I actually started them about 9 months ago (maybe?) and they’ve been languishing on the needles. Since I started them and measured Z’s feet, I think her feet have grown by about two centimeters. I adjusted the length and finished them, but I will actually have to rip out a large portion because she says they are too tight to get on her foot. It’s a tad disappointing, but I should have realized the heel flap should be a little longer. Usually for a good fit, it ends up being about a third of the length of the sole for the way I made socks. I start the heel flap on the sole and wrap it around the back of the heel as I go.

Charlotte’s socks fit nearly perfectly (they have about 1/2 cm to grow into) and I even got her to put them on! That’s a real victory.

Hers are made with leftover Miss Babs Estrellita in Pinball Wizard. She’s wearing them in the picture above while digging through Halloween candy.

I’ve been a bit disenchanted with my larger projects: the Astragal I started back at the end of September, a Still Light Tunic that only has sleeves and pockets left to finish, and the Nightshift is pretty far along that makes the occasional appearance in my hands when I remember it’s in my WIP basket. I know I will LOVE each one of those things when they’re done, but right now the small projects are captivating because they’re fast and satisfying.

In fact, I’m casting on some new rainbow socks for Charlotte right now…
